Apprentice Case Study: Katie Roberts

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I felt like university wasn’t for me and I wanted to earn and learn at the same time as I am more hands on and ready to work. I approached Birmingham Metropolitan College who were happy to show me the Colas Rail apprentice position, which I am still in now (finishing October 2018). I was put for an interview straight away and found out the same week that I will be taken on. I was so happy and still am.

Please describe your experience..

I started my apprenticeship in September 2017, my first day was meeting all of the Colas Rail senior team and learning about the business. I found it challenging at first as the MMA is such a big alliance and it was difficult to manage my actual workload and my college work but it didn’t take long for me to work it out. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 12 months here and cannot wait to stay to take on new tasks and learn even more skills. I've loved every minute.

How has your apprenticeship helped you to progress in your career?

Being a document control and business apprentice it has allowed me to have both sets of skills for both sides of my apprenticeship, giving me the flexibility to progress into either one. It has helped me decide which side I have enjoyed more and how I can develop it further. I am excited to become a full time colleague and progress into document control.

What do you feel are the advantages of doing an apprenticeship over other training or education?

I feel that with apprenticeships are so much more fun and flexible. This is because you can earn on the job, gain new skills and develop whilst earning money. It’s brilliant because you can learn and get your qualifications at the same time as having a wage. It prepares you for full time work by working and earning, as well as giving us the skills we need for our next job in our career.
